Attendance

🌟 Every Day Counts at St Saviour’s

At St Saviour’s, we want every child to have the very best opportunity to learn, achieve and thrive.

Regular attendance and arriving at school on time make a huge difference to your child’s education. Every day in school gives children opportunities to learn new things, spend time with their friends and be part of our school community.

Our aim is for every child to achieve at least 96% attendance.

📊 What Does Your Child’s Attendance Mean?

🌟 100% – Outstanding!

Your child has attended every possible school session.

🟢 98%–99.9% – Excellent

Fantastic attendance. Keep it up!

🟢 96%–97.9% – Good

Your child is attending school regularly and accessing their learning.

🟠 90%–95.9% – Attendance Concern

Your child is beginning to miss a significant amount of learning. We may contact you to discuss their attendance and see whether any support is needed.

🔴 Below 90% – Persistent Absence

Government guidance defines a pupil who misses 10% or more of their possible school sessions as persistently absent.

We will work closely with families where attendance becomes a concern.

📞 Reporting Your Child’s Absence

If your child is unable to attend school, please contact the school as soon as possible on the first day of absence.

Please tell us:

• Your child’s name
• Their class
• The reason for their absence
• When you expect them to return, if known

Please continue to keep the school informed if the absence continues.

📈 Why Is Good Attendance So Important?

Regular attendance helps children:

📚 Keep up with their learning
🧠 Build knowledge and confidence
👫 Develop friendships
❤️ Feel part of the school community
🌟 Achieve their full potential

Missing school regularly can create gaps in learning which become increasingly difficult for children to catch up with.

Every lesson matters. Every day matters. Every child matters.

The importance of being in school on time every day:

Poor punctuality can lead to your child:

  • Feeling embarrassed in front of their friends.
  • Missing the beginning of vital lessons.
  • Missing important instructions for the rest of the school day.
  • Learning habits which could affect their employability in the future.

The chart below explains how many days of school your child will miss if they do not attend school on time each day:

How can I get help with my child's attendance?

If you are worried about your child/children’s attendance, the first port of call is to discuss your concerns with the school directly. The school has a Pastoral Team who may be able to help, and all schools work closely with health and council teams who may also be able to help if needed.

Whether your family is experiencing health difficulties, housing problems, transport issues, anxiety or another challenge, we will listen and look at what support may be available.

Our aim is always to work with families to improve attendance.

🤒 Is My Child Too Ill for School?

We understand that children become unwell from time to time.

Children can usually still attend school with minor illnesses such as:

✓ A minor cough
✓ A runny nose
✓ A sore throat
✓ A mild cold

However, children should remain at home if they are too unwell to take part in normal school activities.

For vomiting and diarrhoea, children should remain away from school until 48 hours after their last episode.

If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to attend, please contact us. We are happy to help.

You can also check the latest NHS guidance on whether your child should attend school.

What about term time leave?

✈️ Holidays & Leave During Term Time

Parents and carers should avoid taking children out of school during term time.

Leave of absence during term time can only be authorised by the Headteacher in exceptional circumstances.

Family holidays are not normally considered exceptional circumstances.

Unauthorised absence may result in further action in accordance with national and Birmingham attendance procedures.

If you believe exceptional circumstances apply, please contact the school and complete the appropriate leave-of-absence request.

Legal Action:

Please note that where parents fail to ensure their child attends school regularly, legal action, including penalty notices, may be considered:

Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 states that as a Parent/carer of a child of statutory school age, you have a legal responsibility to ensure their full time education through regular attendance at school or otherwise.
