Modern Foreign Languages

From Year 3 to Year 6, we teach Spanish to all children. Young pupils are very receptive to learning a new language; they like to mimic and duplicate new sounds. They feel a real sense of accomplishment when they learn to say something new. We have weekly lessons on the timetable, but also integrate Spanish into our everyday routine.

Intent:

Here at St. Saviour's C of E School, we aim to inspire all students and encourage them to gain a love of languages. We see language learning as an important part of a child's overall development and understanding of the wider world. Learning languages allows children to gain a curiosity and understanding of different cultures and this is something we place high value on here at St. Saviour's School. We aim to incorporate language learning into our curriculum regularly to facilitate children's ability to communicate confidently and develop competence as they progress through Key Stage 2. We intend to make language learning fun and interactive and incorporate language learning regularly throughout the school week. We strive to ensure that all of our pupils receive a deep understanding of the language, which will equip them with the fundamental skills needed to communicate enthusiastically and confidently both in school and as a global citizen.

Implementation:

As part of our Languages curriculum, we follow the 'Language Angels' scheme of work to meet the expectations of the National Curriculum. Throughout their weekly language lessons, the children develop skills in a range of areas, including speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. The children engage in opportunities to speak the language alongside completing activities based on what they have learnt in each lesson. They are encouraged to interact regularly with each other throughout lessons to develop confidence and competence when speaking and understanding a foreign language.

KEY STAGE 2 OVERVIEW 2024-25

Application of Languages within school:

We begin teaching languages in year 3. To encourage children to gain an initial love of learning languages and become curious learners, children in year 3 took part in a class assembly based on different countries and cultures around the world. The children were encouraged to research different countries for homework and the information that they found was then used in their class assembly. The children looked at their countries' flags, cultures, traditions, cuisine and language. Encouraging children to gain a love of languages enables them to become global citizens and exposes them to different cultures and languages around the world.

We also encourage children to incorporate different languages throughout their school day. For example, some children respond to the register in a language of their choice, allowing all pupils to be exposed to a variety of different languages on a daily basis.
