Voice 21 Oracy

What is Oracy?

At St Saviour’s C of E Primary School, we believe that every child’s voice matters.
Oracy is all about learning to speak and listen well – being able to share ideas clearly, listen carefully to others and communicate with confidence.

Through oracy, children learn how to:

  • Explain their thinking and build on others’ ideas

  • Listen and respond thoughtfully

  • Work together to solve problems

  • Develop confidence when speaking in front of others

We want our classrooms to be “talk-rich” places where every child has the chance to express themselves, ask questions and learn through discussion.

Why Oracy Matters?

Being a confident speaker and a careful listener helps children in every part of their learning and life.

Research shows that:

  • Strong speaking and listening skills help children become better readers and writers.

  • Pupils with good communication skills often achieve higher results in subjects like Maths and English.

  • Being able to express thoughts and feelings clearly supports positive mental health and wellbeing.

By teaching oracy, we’re helping our children to understand themselves, connect with others and grow into thoughtful, articulate young people who can make a difference in the world.

About Voice 21

Voice 21 is the national charity that advocates for and supports schools in delivering a high-quality oracy education. In becoming a Voice 21 Oracy School, we are joining a network of over 1,100 Voice 21 Oracy Schools across the UK that are transforming teaching and learning through talk.

At St Saviour’s C of E Primary School, we’re excited to be part of the Voice 21 Oracy Programme. This national initiative helps children learn the power of their own voice – to speak with confidence, listen carefully, and share ideas clearly.
Through our work with Voice 21, we’re creating classrooms full of purposeful talk, where every child has the opportunity to express themselves, learn from others and develop the communication skills they’ll need for the future.
